After a long, wet winter we can begin to think about our gardens again. Many trees are beginning to blossom, bulbs are pushing through and we have even received insect bites during January! In short, plants and wildlife are responding to our milder climates. Water logged ground, which is becoming a regular occurrence, is exacerbated by our predominantly clay soils. Adding well rotted manure to the borders can improve drainage with the additional benefits of increasing nutrient levels and microbial activity within the soil. In response, plants will produce strong lush growth and become more resistant to pests and diseases. Rose plants will produce significantly more blooms with the addition of rotted manure....
